Will Orange County See the Expansion of Cannabis Dispensaries?

Learn about the spread of marijuana dispensaries through Orange County.

Orange County is a traditionally conservative outpost in Southern California.  This is why it’s unsurprising that only one city (Santa Ana) out of the 34 that make up Orange County permits cannabis retail.  The city of Santa Ana only issues 30 licenses, meaning that, at most, there are only 30 cannabis retailers serving a county that has 3 million residents and receives over 50 million visitors a year.  Naturally, the supply-demand rate has made many businesses eager to spread marijuana dispensaries through Orange County.

While Santa Ana is currently the only Orange County city that allows cannabis dispensaries, other cities are opening up to the business opportunities offered by the marijuana industry.  For instance, Costa Mesa recently allowed its first marijuana distributor to open its doors, with more expected to follow shortly.  Similarly, the city of Irvine now allows cannabis testing labs within its borders.

While there does seem to be more interest in the cannabis industry, it’s important to note that Orange County remains the most restrictive county in Southern California.  Experts note that the largely conservative population in Orange County is the most significant barrier that marijuana businesses face.  Ultimately, the residents need to accept and feel comfortable with the cultural shift behind cannabis before the industry can see widespread infiltration into the county.
